Flying Free

This was written after I broke up with my college boyfriend of four and a half years, right after I came to teach in South Korea.  It's a poem, which is a little different for me.

I hope you enjoy it.

In one breath you spoke words of praise, in the next you spoke of my faults,
You doubted me and my choices, never truly believing me,
I told you to just wait and see, but you never believed in me,
Finally I emerged from that cocoon we call college,
I was ready, my mind was open, my body strong,
But you had changed, or maybe I never truly knew you,
You wanted me to go to you and the gilded cage you've trapped yourself in,
You never did believe I would fly free, you thought I would sink down roots,
But I did it; I did what I said I would, what I've always dreamed of,
I flew free and far,
Stretching my wings,
Daring to dream,
You couldn't accept it,
You gave up on me,
So I gave up on you
And now,
Finally,
I'm free.
